U.S. stocks turn lower in mid-morning trading, TSX still up

The TSX composite was marginally higher, rising 38.91 points to 12,339.14 in mid-morning trading on Friday. The Dow was down 8.79 to 13,094.89, while NASDAQ fell 5.93 to 2,980.19.

Apple Inc. (AAPL, Stock Forum), one of the most widely held stocks in the S&P 500, reported quarterly results that missed expectations, despite predictions for a strong fourth quarter. Additionally, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN, Stock Forum) reported a narrower-than-expected loss but missed on sales.

The price of gold rose US$2.29 to US$1,714.2 an ounce, while silver eased US$0.07 to U$32.21 an ounce.
