Stocks up in mid-morning trading

The TSX composite was marginally higher, rising 31.88 points to 12,314.24 in mid-morning trading on Wednesday. The Dow rose 20.52 to 13,268.96, while NASDAQ gained 0.93 to 3,023.23.

Patent-licensing firm Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX: T.WIN, Stock Forum) has started litigation against Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX: T.RIM, Stock Forum) alleging patent infringement. The case, launched in the Southern District of Florida, alleges infringement of a patent related to Bluetooth technologies. Wi-LAN shares advanced 0.44%, to $4.52, while RIM moved up 0.8%, to $12.43.

The price of gold ascended US$2.24 to US$1,712.35 an ounce, while silver eased US$0.21 to U$33.20 an ounce.
