RIM signs up singer Alicia Keys: Canadian market movers

On Wednesday, the top TSX mover was Research In Motion (TSX: T.RIM, Stock Forum). The stock dropped 6.62% and was trading at $14.67 on volume of 16.5 million. Shareholders were seemingly unimpressed by the much anticipated unveiling of the communication company’s two Blackberry 10 smartphones.

After the unveiling, Research In Motion announced it had changed its name to BlackBerry and named Alicia Keys Global Creative Director as part of a campaign to become a more recognizable brand.

Northland Resources S.A. (TSX: T.NAU, Stock Forum)was the second most active stock on the TSX. It rose 3.45% and was trading at $0.15 on volume of 3.3 million shares. The iron ore producer announced it would start loading its first vessel on Feb. 9, 2013, for a shipment of 40,000 tonnes of iron ore concentrate to end customer and partner Tata Steel UK Ltd., one of the largest global steel companies.

Majestic Gold Corp. (TSX: V.MJS, Stock Forum) was the volume leader on the TSX Venture Exchange. It gained 5% and was trading at $0.105 on volume of 4.8 million. The gold producer had no related news to explain the high volume in trading.

The second most active stock on the TSX Venture was Raging River Exploration. (TSX: V.RRX, Stock Forum). It lost 2.17% and was trading at $3.16 after 2.3 million shares changed hands. On Jan. 28, the oil and gas junior said it increased proven plus probable reserves by 215% to 17.2 million barrels of oil (95% oil) and proven reserves by 201% to 11.5 million barrels of oil (95% oil).
