Stock markets mixed at the open

North American stocks were mixed in early trading Wednesday, as figures from the U.S. Commerce Department had housing starts at the highest level in four years.

Investors will be on alert today for any changes in the U.S. central bank’s monetary policy.

The TSX fell 21.19 points to 12,789.02, while the Venture exchange was off 8.88 points to 1,162.92.

Shares of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL, Stock Forum) eased 1.6% to $452.64 after supplier Foxconn Technology Group froze hiring at its biggest factory in Shanzhen.

The Dow was up 15.71 points to 14,051.38 and the Nasdaq gave up 7.321 points to 3.206,27.

Gold prices fell $17.195 to $1,587.69, while the price of silver was down $0.585 to $28.88.
