Medical marijuana update: Calyx Bio-Ventures (V.CYX) hopes to be a weed killer

Calyx Bio-Ventures (TSX:V.CYX, Stock Forum) has been hard at work on a business plan of demonstrating the potential for the carinata seed as a biofuel and fallow field substitute.

But funding disagreements with BDC Capital, their 49.96% partner in Agrisoma, the company advancing the carinata project, have put new questions to the Calyx board as to how they should invest $2.1 million they hope to raise in a non-brokered private placement round.

Toss it into carinata, or… medical marijuana?

It’s way too early in the day to know whether Calyx (which, full disclosure, is a Stockhouse Publishing client) is seriously into the medical marijuana switch or whether they’re just playing hardball with BDC Capital, and the status quo of staying the course with carinata appears to present a high upside, green investment opportunity of substance – after all, they’ve already test flown a jet on carinata-derived fuel.

But the chance they may switch to agri-med from agri-fuel has seen a share bump of 25% on the day, with nearly a million shares traded, which long holders will no doubt enjoy and which will give management something to think about going forward.

Other pot streakers for Monday include 88 Capital Corp (TSX:V.EEC, Stock Forum), which jumped a cent around 1:30pm eastern to be up 33.3%, and Maple Leaf Green World (TSX:V.MGW, Stock Forum) which jumped 28.5% on the day on no news. In the five days since that company announced it was looking for a grow license, it has gone from $0.025 to $0.045. Enertopia (CSE:C.TOP, Stock Forum) is also up 20.5% on no news.

At the other end of the show, Supreme Pharamaceuticals (V.SL, Stock Forum) has dropped 15.3% Monday, sinking to $0.055 on nearly 10m volume. Pan American Fertililzer (TSX:V.PFE, Stock Forum) continued to fall after it went public that it wants to be the weed field’s fertilizer of choice, continuing a steady decline that has followed the massive one-day rise that hit when suspicions first landed that it was weed-bound. Long holders are still in profit, but the company is really struggling to build momentum in the ganj-space.

Windfire Capital (TSX:V.WIF, Stock Forum) also dropped 12.5%, losing some of the gains from the last week, but still looking hockey-stick-ish.

NEWS TODAY:
The SEC has suspended trading in Advanced Cannabis Solutions (OTCQB:CANN, Stock Forum), saying, “It appears to the Securities and Exchange Commission that there is a lack of current and accurate information concerning the securities of Advanced Cannabis Solutions, Inc.”

The SEC continued, “There are questions regarding whether certain undisclosed affiliates and shareholders of Advanced Cannabis common stock engaged in an unlawful distribution of securities through the OTC BB and OTC Link. The Commission is of the opinion that the public interest and the protection of investors require a suspension of trading in the securities of the above-listed company.”

The company is taking a combative stance, with Jill M. Peterson, Assistant Secretary of the company saying, "No one at the SEC contacted the Company or any of its officers or directors regarding whatever questions they had regarding this matter […]All of the shares owned by the company's officers and directors are restricted and have not traded in the public market.”

Creative Edge Nutrition (OTO: FITX, Stock Forum) has secured $20m in private financing, but failed to launch its share price upward accordingly, perhaps due to the 3.4 billion shares it has outstanding.

Satori Resources (TSX:V.BUD, Stock Forum) has issued a clarification as to its current director shortage and trade halt, stating that former director Strand left not over company direction, but due to a new post in a government department which required stepping down from public company roles. The company has now appointed former director Walter Henry to the board, fulfilling its TSX listing requirement of having a minimum of three directors. The TSX had denied a waiver to three director rule, and the stock remains halted. Henry was last on the board when the company was called St Eugene Mining.

Easton Pharmaceuticals (OTO:EAPH, Stock Forum) announced a slate of new advisors and execs. Didn’t do much for their share price.

Vertical farming tech company Vertical Designs has acquired controlling interest in Affinor Resources (CSE:C.AFI, Stock Forum), with their owner Nick Brusatore having advised the company for a year as a director. The company share price didn’t jump on the news but it has gone from $0.03 to $0.32 over the last week or so on the strength of ongoing moves like this.

In other news, Vancouver has just opened its first cannabis-friendly pizza joint. Grinders and infusers at the tables, but you have to bring your own - unless you have a medical marijuana prescription, then you can get your pizza cookes with cannabis oil. More info here.

NEW PLAYERS:
Meridex Software Corporation (TSX:V.MSC.H, Stock Forum) has not announced any news regarding a shift to medical marijuana, but the word on the street seems to be that not only is it in, but the horse has bolted if you didn’t have stock. Today, on 4.9m shares traded, it went from $0.07 to $0.275, a 292.8% jump. Those who bought it as an internet protocol security and management software play will, today, be planning their trips to Maui.

Blackstone Ventures (TSX:V.BLV, Stock Forum) is trade halted ‘pending company contact’. A few days ago there was ample bullboard talk that they might ‘go green’. Methinks we’re about to see, though it’s important to note this trade halt was IIROC’s decision, not the company’s.

INSIDE DIRT:
I have it on good authority that regulators have been firing off warnings to certain mining juniors warning them that, unless they have evidence that they're actually pursuing medical marijuana plays, to say so for a share bump could lead to a trade halt or worse.
