Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. Research Report
The Q4 2012 earnings of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc., the world's second largest copper producer, were driven by higher production levels. Copper and gold sales increased, compared to the same quarter in 2011 - a low period due to labor unrest at the company's Grasberg mine, the world's largest recoverable copper reserve. Q4 2012 profit rose to $743 million, or 78 cents per share. Another potential growth catalyst for Freeport is asset diversification. The company recently decided to purchase two oil and gas drillers for $20 billion. The company expects a significant increase in copper production supported by its strong earnings results. It projects a growth in copper production to more than five million pounds in 2015. For 2013, Freeport expects a growth of more than seven percent for copper sales in the North American market. Southern Copper Corp Research Report
Southern Copper Corporation is on the struggling side. The company raised its copper production by seven percent and in 2013, copper production is expected to go up by 4.6 percent. Despite production increase, the company's overall growth is slowing down. Southern Copper's revenue and EPS are declining, and the guidance for 2013 is also not looking good. The company's 2012 net income declined 17.2 percent, to $1.93 billion from $2.34 billion in 2011. Sales fell 2.2 percent, to $6.67 billion mainly because of lower commodity prices. Southern Copper was severely affected by the global demand slowdown, as well as the pressure from competitors. Copper is seen to continue growing due to increase in demands mainly from China and the United States. Global copper consumption is expected to double to 27 million tons by 2020. This increase in demand will drive copper miners to scale up their production. Mixed results are seen from Freeport and Southern Copper because even though demand is starting to increase, there will also be increase in supply. NVIDIA Corporation Research Report
NVIDIA Corporation separated its product lines into two segments: the graphics processing units (GPU) line and the application processor for smartphones and tablets line. Its Q4 2012 revenue revealed that the GPU revenue was up only seven percent year over year, while the revenue for its smartphone and tablet application processor was up 90 percent year over year. The fourth quarter revenue reflected the ongoing weakness in the PC business and the growing market of mobile devices.
With PC sales losing the battle against tablets, and are most likely to experience a second straight annual decline in 2013, NVIDIA has branched out into processors that run mobile phones and tablets. Taking advantage of the mobile revolution, NVIDIA launched its Icera baseband chip, which handles the wireless functions of a phone, to further increase the sales of the company's application processor line. Icera, an integrated chip that combines the Tegra processor with an LTE modem, allowed NVIDIA to command a one percent market share in the LTE space in 2012. NVIDIA also plans to start shipping a new hand-held gaming device, Project Shield, with the upcoming Tegra 4 processor. Project Shield will run Android games and also has a built-in screen. The company claimed that Tegra 4 is the world's fastest mobile processor, with record-setting performance and battery life. Intel Corporation Research Report
Industry leader Intel Corporation is also likely to join the LTE bandwagon in 2014. The company has only just begun shipping single-mode and LTE basebands and has yet to ship a combined voice and data solution on the same chip. Revenue from the company's PC client group was down six percent year over year and 1.5 percent sequentially. The company also launched the Yolo Smartphone, mainly designed for the cost conscious as well as first time buyers in Kenya. This low budget device, affordably priced at $125, may yield high sales volumes and may also raise the platform to stage future initiatives in the mobile world. In the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Intel is set to showcase its dual-core, dual graphics Android smartphone. The rise in mobile computing paved a new venture for the semiconductor industry. The smartphone wars and the decline in PC sales lead the industry to undergo a massive transformation. Other dominant forces include uncertainties in technical innovation and the global macroeconomic trends. Texas Instruments Incorporated Research Report
Texas Instruments is one of the world's largest producers of semiconductors and a leading producer of analog technology. The company has profit margins of 13. 5 percent, revenue of $13.3 billion, and 15.7 percent return on equity. One of its initiatives to create value is the unveiling of its low energy Bluetooth with over-the-air download capabilities. The product aims to take advantage of the growing Bluetooth market. The company also focuses on expanding its product portfolio by coming up with new innovations. Texas Instruments has a large market share with a strong balance sheet. Its end markets are segmented into analog, embedded, and wireless. While three of the segments are performing well, the wireless segment is facing a tough competition. This may drive the company to increase R&D.
Although Texas Instruments beat analysts' estimates in the recently reported Q4 2012 results, the company gave a disappointing Q1 2013 guidance, with lower-than-estimates EPS and revenue. The company noted that it is operating in a poor demand environment with limited visibility going forward. Q1 2013 earnings results will be released on April 22.
