Lockheed Martin Works With Bay Area Teachers To Inspire Future Generations Of Scientists And Engineers

Company Hosts 20 Teachers Over Summer In Ongoing Effort To Enhance Math and Science Education

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) announced today that it is hosting 20 middle and high school teachers over the summer as part of the company's long-standing support of the Bay Area-based Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME) and its Summer Fellowship Program. IISME works to cultivate a strong, highly skilled workforce in mathematics, science and technology.

IISME's Summer Fellowship Program places qualified teachers into local companies and research labs for an eight-week learning experience. During this period, each teacher is paired with industry mentors to augment their science and math skills by solving real-world problems. Upon returning to the classroom, application of the industry experience helps teachers stimulate student interest in math and science and, in turn, helps students to become lifelong learners.

"For nearly three decades, Lockheed Martin has partnered with IISME to provide Bay Area teachers with a memorable hands-on experience," said Kevin Bilger, Lockheed Martin vice president, and member of the IISME Strategic Leadership Council. "We're excited to collaborate on the technical challenges faced in developing our innovative space systems and to help them apply the lessons learned back in the classroom to better prepare their students to become our next-generation of scientists and engineers."

This summer, Lockheed Martin IISME Teacher-Fellows will work on a broad range of technical challenges associated with space-based systems under development at the company's Bay Area facilities including satellite telecommunications and other advanced technologies.

IISME was founded in 1985 by a consortium of San Francisco Bay Area companies including Lockheed Martin, in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley and seeks to transform teaching and learning through industry-education partnerships. Since IISME's inception, Lockheed Martin has led Bay Area companies by sponsoring nearly 400 Teacher Fellowships.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs about 118,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's net sales for 2012 were $47.2 billion. For additional information, visit our website: http://www.lockheedmartin.com.
