On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated menthol cigarettes are likely to pose a greater public health risk than regular cigarettes. People who smoke menthols "show greater signs of nicotine dependence and are less likely to successfully quit smoking," the FDA said. According to a study by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the percentage of menthol smokers in the U.S. totaled 37.5 percent in 2011, up from 33.9 percent in 2008. The FDA has yet to make a recommendation to ban or limit the sale of menthols.

Lorillard Inc. (NYSE: LO) shares traded in the range of $43.77 to $45.27 Tuesday before settling to close at $44.08, a decrease of 4.49 percent. The stock appears to be facing some resistance at the $44.30 and $44.62 levels with some support at $43.33. Citi analyst Vivien Azer estimates menthols make up about 90 percent of Lorillard’s sales volumes.

Altria Group Inc. (NYSE: MO) shares traded in the range of $35.73 to $37.01 Tuesday before settling to close at $35.99, a decrease of 2.41 percent. The stock appears to be facing some resistance at the $36.08 and $36.24 levels with some support at $35.90. Citi analyst Vivien Azer estimates Marlboro Menthol accounts for about 20 percent of sales.

Reynolds American, Inc. (NYSE: RAI) shares traded in the range of $50.06 to $51.56 Tuesday before settling to close at $50.79, a decrease of 1.99 percent. The stock appears to be facing some resistance at the $51.20 and $53.03 levels with some support at $50.70. Citi analyst Vivien Azer estimates menthol cigarettes accounts for about 30 percent of sales.

British American Tobacco PLC (NYSEMKT: BTI) shares traded in the range of $106.05 to $107.04 Tuesday before settling to close at $106.43, a decrease of 0.59 percent. The stock appears to be facing some resistance at the $106.72 and $108.30 levels with some support at $105.01. Shares of British American Tobacco have gained approximately 5.0 percent year-to-date.
