Optum Announces Expansion in Southfield, Mich.

UNH

Optum, the health services business of UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), announced it will add approximately 75 new jobs in Southfield, Mich., in the next six to eight months, with plans for total new hires of 100-120 over the next three years.

The announcement was made at a news conference today in Southfield attended by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and UnitedHealth Group President and CEO Stephen J. Hemsley.

“Michigan’s business environment, and exceptional and growing technology workforce make the state a natural partner for UnitedHealth Group in our efforts to make the health care system work better for everyone, and help Americans live healthier lives,” said Hemsley.

“I commend UnitedHealth Group and Optum for recognizing that Michigan is a great place to work and live,” said Snyder. “The jobs they are creating here show we have been successful in positioning Michigan to compete in the modern innovation economy.”

The new jobs are in software development, Internet design and program management, and will help expand Optum’s User Experience and User Interaction centers of excellence. The focus of the centers of excellence is to develop technologies that give consumers and care providers access to easy-to-use health care products and services when and where they need them, including through digital and mobile technologies.

Today’s announcement means the addition of 75 permanent, full-time health care technology jobs at Optum’s facility in Southfield in 2014, and an additional 25-45 positions over the next three years, for a total of 100-120. Over a four-year period, Optum will have added 185 jobs in Michigan. The Optum building in Southfield will undergo a renovation to make room for the additional people.

The new jobs will bring UnitedHealth Group’s total number of employees in Michigan to approximately 700. UnitedHealth Group serves the health care needs of nearly 700,000 people in Michigan.
