PG&E Promotes Safe Digging On National 811 Day

PCG

Aug. 11 (8/11) Serves as an Appropriate Reminder to Always Call 811 Before Digging

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As temperatures continue to be ideal for outdoor projects, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) reminds customers to always call 811 before any digging project to have underground utility lines marked. This is a free service for everyone. Striking a single line can cause injury, incur repair costs or fines, and result in inconvenient outages to an entire neighborhood.

PG&E reminds customers to always call 811 before any digging project

When calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected to their local One Call Center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies—such as PG&E—of their intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the underground lines with flags, spray paint or both.

"Our first priority is the keep the public safe," said Steven Fischer, PG&E's director of Emergency Preparedness. "August 11 provides a great opportunity to remind our customers about the importance of calling 811 before any residential or commercial digging project. Installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree or laying a patio are all examples where a call to 811 can be the difference in making your project a safe project."
