Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), a premier consumer financial services company with 80 years of retail heritage, and its People with Disabilities Network (PDN) hosted an employee and community partner event on November 5 to raise awareness of promoting employment for persons with disabilities in Kettering, Ohio. Organized by the PDN as part of Synchrony Financial’s annual United Way campaign, the event drew hundreds of employees and partners and featured keynote speaker, Kyle Maynard, a motivational speaker, author, entrepreneur and athlete born with congenital amputation. Born with arms that end at the elbows and legs near the knees, Maynard has participated in several athletic activities, including wrestling, weightlifting and mixed martial arts. He recently became the first man to crawl on his own to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

“Synchrony Financial has a culture of celebrating the collective talents, differences and experiences of our employees,” said Glenn Marino, executive vice president and chief commercial officer for Synchrony Financial. “In planning this event, our PDN focused on topics which illustrate how each of us has the ability to overcome any challenge. Kyle’s inspiring life story demonstrated that within every individual, there exists the power to overcome limitations and achieve extraordinary goals.”

Synchrony Financial has a longstanding commitment of engaging with employees and communities through its Diversity Business Resource Groups, including the African American Network; Asian Pacific American Network; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Partnership; Hispanic Network; People with Disabilities Network; Veteran’s Network; and Women’s Network.

Synchrony Financial has had a presence in Kettering for more than 15 years, and local employees serve a number of community organizations by contributing more than 1,800 volunteer hours annually. During the past year, the site has added more than 200 new jobs, and may add more than 100 roles across various functions, including call center operations, collections, marketing and risk management.
