HII

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Nov. 7, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) showcased its nuclear capabilities to a U.S. Nuclear Infrastructure Council delegation during a tour of the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division on Thursday. HII is a member of the NIC, a Washington, D.C.-based business consortium that advocates for new nuclear energy initiatives in the United States and engagement of the American supply chain globally.

"It is beneficial for NIC members to understand and experience our design and construction capabilities first-hand and its application to domestic commercial nuclear manufacturing," said Pete Diakun, Newport News Shipbuilding's vice president, energy programs. "We look forward to continuing our involvement in commercial nuclear efforts both in the U.S. and, in the future, potentially abroad."

Diakun led the shipyard tour, which included stops at Newport News' steel production facility and foundry and a submarine construction facility. The group also learned about the shipyard's modeling and simulation, supply chain management, and nuclear energy efforts.

"Newport News Shipbuilding is a world-class U.S. nuclear industry asset that brings proven capabilities to a new generation of American nuclear energy plants, including small modular reactors that will be factory assembled," said David Blee, NIC's CEO. "It was extremely valuable for our NIC manufacturing and supply chain team to see Newport News' impressive resources and depth of experience up close and personal."

Huntington Ingalls Industries designs, builds and manages the life-cycle of the most complex nuclear and conventionally-powered ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. For more than a century, HII's Newport News and Ingalls shipbuilding divisions in Virginia and Mississippi have built more ships in more ship classes than any other U.S. naval shipbuilder. HII also provides engineering and project management services expertise to the commercial energy industry, the Department of Energy and other government customers. Headquartered in Newport News, Virginia, HII employs more than 39,000 people operating both domestically and internationally. For more information, visit:
