Jennifer Chandler Honored for Efforts to Promote Financial Literacy and College Preparedness

Michigan’s Student Financial Services Bureau, a division of the Department of Treasury, recognized Jennifer Chandler of Sallie Mae – the nation’s saving, planning, and paying for college company – for her efforts to promote financial literacy and college preparedness to Michigan students, families, and guidance counselors. Ms. Chandler’s work with the Bureau has included educational webinars, presentations, and newsletter articles reaching families and counselors across the state.

Sallie Mae helped kick off a new webinar series offered by the Bureau designed to share information on funding post-secondary education and college access. Ms. Chandler, along with officials from the Bureau, shared free college planning tools, college cost calculators, and other resources available to Michigan families to make a plan for college. Ms. Chandler was honored at a recent Bureau meeting in Lansing by Anne Wohlfert, director of the Bureau.

“We know students and their families are seeking simple, straightforward, and easy to understand guidance on how to create a financial plan for college,” said Ms. Wohlfert. “Sallie Mae and Jenny Chandler, in particular, are terrific partners and resources in helping Michigan families navigate what can sometimes be an overwhelming process.”

The Michigan Department of Treasury Student Financial Services Bureau encourages students to pursue postsecondary education by providing equality of access to student financial resources and information. The Bureau’s website features financial literacy tools, videos, and webinars to educate families on preparing for college.

“The hardest part about making a plan to pay for college is simply getting started, so it’s immensely gratifying to be able to connect students and families with the knowledge, tools, and resources that can help them,” said Ms. Chandler, director, business development, Sallie Mae. “The Student Financial Services Bureau has helped bring this issue front and center for Michigan families, and continues to provide great content for counselors, as well. We are thrilled to be able to assist in this effort.”
