Hudson and Frlan co-authored the paper “Toward
a Hierarchy of SDI Data Rates” published in the April 2014 issue of
SMPTE’s Motion Imaging Journal. The paper described a
next-generation SDI interface based on a hierarchical approach to
increased data rates for UHDTV applications. The paper also discussed
the progress in standards and technology developments in support of
serial definition interface (SDI) operating at 6Gb/s, 12Gb/s and 24Gb/s
(UHD-SDI).
“UHD-SDI has seen enthusiastic market adoption as witnessed by the rapid
development of new products by equipment manufactures that support
UHDTV,” said John Hudson, Director of Strategic Technology and New
Business Development at Semtech. “This activity has been enabled due in
large part to the publication of UHD-SDI standards by SMPTE.”
UHD-SDI is an uncompressed interface, ideal for UHDTV infrastructures,
including routers, cameras, monitors, switchers and more. The UHD-SDI
interface offers pristine image quality, is backwards compatible with
existing SDI systems, and is standardized by both SMPTE and the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), simplifying UHDTV
infrastructure upgrades and reducing risk for broadcasters.
Nigel Seth-Smith of Semtech, along with Randy Conrod of Imagine
Communications — a leader in hybrid SDI/IP solutions — will demonstrate
leadership in UHDTV SDI/IP hybrid infrastructures by co-presenting a
paper entitled “UHD in a Hybrid SDI/IP World” at the technical
conference. The paper discusses SDI — the only standardized means of
connecting UHD devices today — and the challenges and issues the
industry faces as it attempts to embrace hybrid SDI/IP environments.
“UHDTV infrastructures will utilize a hybrid architecture consisting of
both SDI and IP interfaces. This architecture presents new technical
challenges that need to be addressed,” said Randy Conrod, Senior Product
Manager at Imagine Communications. “Semtech is a leader in SDI
technology and we look forward to continue working with Semtech in the
development of our next-generation products.”
