Three High School Students Will be Recognized During Award Ceremony on March 22

Grand Prize Winner to Receive $10,000 for Creating a Plan to Pay for College

After months of anticipation, thousands of participants, and more than 30,000 online votes cast, three high school students and their families will be flown to Boston to learn if they’ve won Sallie Mae’s “Make College Happen Challenge.” The award ceremony will take place on March 22 at 1 p.m. on Tufts University’s Medford/Somerville Campus in Mass.

The “Make College Happen Challenge,” conducted in partnership with By Kids For Kids, a leader in education that inspires innovation in youth, asked entrants to communicate creatively their plan to pay for college. The three winners (listed alphabetically by first name), Alexander Gomez of Ruidoso, New Mexico; Kaci Nuehring of Clive, Iowa, and Nicolas Badila of Jonesboro, Georgia, were selected through rounds of judging and public online voting. Sallie Mae will reveal which of these deserving high school students will be the grand prize winner of $10,000, as well as the second place winner of $5,000, and the third place winner of $2,500.

   

WHO:

Sallie Mae leadership, including Charles Rocha, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, and Martha Holler, senior vice president of marketing and communications; along with Norm Goldstein, founder and chief executive officer of By Kids For Kids; employees from Sallie Mae’s nearby Newton, Mass. office; and the winners of the "Make College Happen Challenge” (listed alphabetically by first name):

-- Alexander Gomez of Ruidoso, New Mexico, who submitted an animated video.

-- Kaci Nuehring of Clive, Iowa, who submitted a whiteboard video.

-- Nicolas Badila of Jonesboro, Georgia, who created an autobiographical video.
