Materion’s SupremEX® Used in New Line of High Security, Luxury Smartphones
Metal Matrix Composite Helps Enable Innovations in Consumer Electronics
As an advanced materials provider, Materion Corporation (NYSE:MTRN) has been at the forefront of the consumer electronics
market, helping enable new technologies and meet the demand for ever-increasing functionality of hand-held devices with its high
performance alloys, composites and other specialized materials. When SIRIN LABS set out to design SOLARIN, a military-grade
smartphone, the company selected SupremEX®, a high strength, lightweight metal matrix composite, for the chassis. The new
SIRIN LABS smartphone went on sale on May 31, 2016.
SupremEX, an aerospace grade aluminum alloy, is used in a range of applications, including satellite, optical systems,
automotive and aerospace structures. The material combines the lightweight properties of aluminum with the outstanding strength and
stiffness of ceramic that is ideal for smartphones.
As well as SupremEX, leading manufacturers use a variety of Materion materials in their smartphones. BrushForm® 158, a high
strength, foil-gauge, copper nickel tin alloy is used for voice coil motor actuators that stabilize smartphone cameras to produce
sharper, clearer images. Additionally, Materion provides precision coatings that enable thinner and lighter smartphone sensors,
which in turn, allow manufacturers to add new features without sacrificing size or weight. Further, Materion supplies precision
optics materials that are key enablers of smartphone thermal imaging attachments.
“We’re pleased that SIRIN LABS selected SupremEX for its new smartphone,” said Glenn Maxwell, President, Materion Performance
Alloys and Composites. “We produce innovative materials and are always looking ahead to anticipate material needs for
next-generation and specialty devices like SOLARIN.”
