athenaGives program donates over $750,000 in grants and service donations to free clinics and innovative
nonprofits, surpassing $2 million in donations to date
Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, Zen Hospice Project, and SIRUM honored
WATERTOWN, Mass., Nov. 17, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATHN), a leading provider of network-enabled services and mobile
applications for healthcare providers nationwide, today announced that it has donated over $750,000 in grants and services to
deserving nonprofit and charitable health organizations in 2016. The employee-directed cash grants and athenaNet® service donations
are initiatives of the company's corporate responsibility program, athenaGives, which supports local non-profit organizations and
free and charitable clinics domestically and abroad which share athenahealth’s vision to unbreak healthcare.
In 2016, the company awarded individual cash grants valued up to $20,000 to charitable organizations fixing health care problems
and connecting patients in need to quality care. In partnership with the More Disruption Please program, athenaGives provided additional grants to disruptive, innovative
healthcare nonprofits. athenaGives continued its hallmark service donation program, donating use of its network-enabled services to
forty free and charitable clinics—more than doubling the number on the athenahealth network.
This year’s athenaGives beneficiaries demonstrate the variety of opportunities to address pain points and unbreak healthcare.
Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program provides comprehensive care to Boston’s most
vulnerable and resilient citizens; Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco reimagines the end of life experience; and SIRUM saves lives by connecting unopened unexpired medications to patients in need.
“SIRUM is thrilled to receive support from athenahealth, a company that shares our commitment to improving healthcare through
innovation,” said Kiah Williams, SIRUM co-founder. “By using technology to redistribute unused medications, SIRUM seeks to
reduce waste and improve access to prescription drugs for millions of Americans. We are grateful that athenahealth not only
appreciates innovative models like ours, but also commits funds to help them scale.”
Since athenaGives’ founding in 2010, the program has donated more than $2 million in grants and services to healthcare
nonprofits. Most notably, the program has helped volunteer providers in 55 free and charitable clinics across the U.S. use
athenaNet to care for more than 60,000 uninsured and underinsured individuals. The program also works abroad, donating its
services to two charitable clinics in Haiti. Cash donations invest directly in the health of communities where
athenahealth offices are located: Watertown, MA; Belfast, ME; San Francisco, CA; Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Princeton, NJ; and
Chennai, India.
“athenahealth is working to unbreak healthcare, but we can’t do it alone,” said Jonathan Bush, athenahealth CEO. “With
athenaGives, we can maximize athenahealth’s social impact by investing in high performing, innovative nonprofits and leveraging our
network, knowledge, and work for good. These inspiring organizations aren’t just plugging holes in the system and delivering
care under extreme conditions; they’re applying fresh, innovative thinking to some of the industry’s most entrenched problems, and
are fixing them from the ground up in athenahealth’s own backyard. That’s work athenahealth is proud and honored to
fund.”
