TORONTO, April 4, 2017 /CNW/ - SiriusXM Canada (TSX: XSR), the country's leading audio
entertainment company, today announced the return of the highly anticipated SiriusXM's Top Comic competition with a $25,000 grand prize and a guaranteed spot at three of Canada's biggest comedy
festivals in 2018: JFL42 (Toronto), JFL NorthWest (Vancouver), Just For Laughs Montreal and inclusion in JFL: All Access, airing on The
Comedy Network.
Travel grants are offered to the 60 comics from across Canada selected to audition in either
Toronto or Vancouver. This will be the eighth year the contest
will scan the country in search of Canada's best comedian – THE Top Comic.
"We're excited to kick off Top Comic again this year, which has become a tentpole in the Canadian comedy landscape and the
biggest competition in the industry," said Ben Miner, Canadian comic and host of SiriusXM's
Canada Laughs. "Canada is known for producing comedy greats and we're excited to shine a
light on this year's competitors."
As of today, and until April 24, Canadian comics can register at www.siriusxm.ca/topcomic. Once SiriusXM selects the 60 best,
auditions will be held before a live audience and a panel of industry judges over six nights. Auditions will be hosted by Miner
and recorded for broadcast throughout North America on SiriusXM's uncensored comedy channel,
Canada Laughs (ch. 168).
The 2017 auditions will take place on the following dates:
- May 29 - Yuk Yuk's, Toronto
- May 30 - The Drake Underground, Toronto
- May 31 - Absolute Comedy, Toronto
- June 6 - The Comedy Mix, Vancouver
- June 6 - The Comedy Mix (late show), Vancouver
- June 7 - Yuk Yuk's, Vancouver
Judges will select three comics from each audition to move on as Semi-Finalists where their videos will be placed online and
Canadians will have the chance to vote for their favourite. The six comics with the most votes will move on as Finalists, as well
as two additional comics as chosen by a panel of industry judges. The eight Finalists will compete in the Top Comic Finale in
Toronto during JFL42, presented by Air Canada in association with SiriusXM.
Top Comic is part of SiriusXM Canada's ongoing initiatives to provide exposure to Canadian talent. Last year, Toronto's Chris Robinson took home the title and grand prize, with
Sophie Buddle of Vancouver and Che
Durena of Toronto placing as runners-up. Previous winners include Faisal Butt, Derek Seguin, Pete Zedlacher, Eric
Andrews, Matt O'Brien and Brian Stollery.
Canada Laughs (ch. 168) features uncensored Canadian comedy 24/7 including stand-up, sketch and more, putting the
