REPEAT: Company Initiates Ammonia Destruction Validation Program For Ontario-Based Gold Mining Operations

GUELPH, Ontario, Sept. 04, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. Gene Shelp, President and CEO of Current Water Technologies Inc. (TSX-V:WATR) (“CWTI” or “the Company”), is pleased to announce that the Company continues to develop ammonia destruction opportunities for its patented AmmEL Technology within the mining and municipal sectors.

Building on our recent large scale on-site demonstration successes in the Abitibi region of Quebec and Western Canada, as well as the new Metal & Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations that include unionized ammonia as a prescribed deleterious substance, CWTI is pleased to report that another prominent mining company, this time in northern Ontario, has engaged CWTI for the purpose of mini- pilot testing its AmmEL ammonia destruction technology.  

Following the current testing program, CWTI anticipates proceeding to a two-month onsite program with its versatile, state-of-the-art AmmEL demonstration scale unit proven capable of treating approximately 4 m3 per hour of mine wastewater effluent containing ammonia levels ranging from 40-50 mg/L. The system is designed to effectively maintain the ammonia level in treated water below 10 mg/L at temperatures as low as 0 oC.

Furthermore, in Q4, the Company anticipates partnering with another leading mining company in northern Ontario to conduct a similar staged ammonia destruction testing program.

The AmmEL-LC Electrochemical Ammonia Treatment System is a two-stage process consisting of ion exchange, followed by electrochemical oxidation of ammonia to environmentally friendly nitrogen gas (N2). Designed to achieve high ammonia removal rates in industrial and municipal wastewater, groundwater sources and industrial process waters, the technology does not produce nitrate, a known carcinogen, or the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Unlike conventional biological systems, the technology is also not adversely affected by low water temperatures (>0 °C) and has the ability to achieve very low ammonia levels in treated streams (<1 mg NH4/L). The system can be implemented as a full-scale, stand-alone treatment plant or as a complementary upgrade to conventional methods at new or existing water treatment facilities.

In contrast to competing physicochemical approaches for the treatment of ammonia, CWTI's innovative ammonia treatment system is extremely efficient even under the high hardness (high calcium and magnesium) conditions characteristic of mine wastewater.
