More Than 50 Percent of Americans Are Last Minute Holiday Shoppers
New holiday research from Hilton Honors details top consumer trends and which U.S. cities procrastinate,
regift and thrift
This year, holiday shopping should have been a breeze with a whopping 32 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Despite
the added time, a new study released today from
Hilton Honors reveals some eye-opening shopping trends: 50 percent of shoppers wait until the last month and 40 percent wait
until the final week, or don’t finish at all.
Procrastination Nation:
The new survey identified the top ten cities with consumers who admit they put off shopping until the week, or even the day
before the holiday:
- Cleveland
- Orlando, Fla.
- Raleigh, N.C.
- New York
- Providence, R.I.
- Columbus, Ohio
- Los Angeles
- Las Vegas
- Atlanta
- Phoenix
How Cities Sized Up:
Teaming up with Sperling’s BestPlaces, the research also paints a picture of how cities across the country are measuring up
amidst all the merriment:
- Cleveland is the least prepared with their holiday shopping.
- Kansas City, Kan. is the most prepared with their holiday shopping.
- Memphis, Tenn. is the thriftiest city when it comes to holiday shopping.
- Providence, R.I. is more interested in gifting experiences than items.
- Jacksonville, Fla. admits to regifting the most.
With a fresh perspective on time-saving tips and great gift ideas, Hilton Honors offers shoppers easy, instant solutions for
cities on the ‘naughty’ list. Read more about holiday shopping behaviors around the country by visiting the
Hilton Honors Newsroom.
Top Holiday Trends:
The survey also uncovered additional eye-opening holiday shopping trends, including which cities tend to regift and which are
the most thrifty:
- In a New York (Last) Minute - According to the survey, shoppers in New York are nearly 50
percent more likely to wait until the day before Christmas to finish holiday shopping, as compared with the national
average.
- Recycle, Reuse, Regift - More than half of respondents around the country admit to
regifting.
- Puzzled over Presents - “Not Sure What to Get” indexed high with procrastinators and regifters
nationwide.
- Bah Humbug - Chicago and Detroit were both 10 percent more likely to say they hate holiday
shopping, as compared with the national average. Tampa, Fla. was just 1 percentage point behind them.
