U.S. stocks were lower Monday as investors considered data which showed that the American manufacturing sector expanded last month at a slower than expected pace.
Canadian stocks stumbled to a negative start as mining stocks led the way and U.S. manufacturing data came in below expectations.
The S&P/TSX Composite was down 54.76 points to 12,695.14, while the TSX Venture Exchange eased 9.44 points to close at 1,089.56.
Active stocks included Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA, Stock Forum) jumped 16% to $43.93, after the electric car maker said it expects to achieve its first-ever quarterly profit based on strong sales of its all-electric Model S.
Shares of eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY, Stock Forum) rose 3% to $55.71 after analysts raised price targets on the online retailer.
In Canada, China Gold International Resources Corp. Ltd. (TSX: T.CGG, Stock Forum) slipped 13% to $3.33 following a Bloomberg report that the death toll from a landslide at one of its mines in Tibet has risen to 21 people, with another 62 still missing. On Friday, a landslide struck a workers’ camp at the Jiama copper mine in Tibet, burying 83 workers.
