Buzz on the Bullboards: Summertime Blues?

Generally speaking, activity on Stockhouse has been at an elevated level versus the typical summer (“sell in May and go away”?). But are investors finally deciding to place a little more focus on summer recreation and a little less focus on monitoring their investments? That seems to be the message that is emerging with respect to recent activity on the Stockhouse Bullboards.

As readers can see, Bullboard totals are still strong for cannabis companies, but these totals are roughly half of what we were seeing when sentiment for cannabis was especially strong earlier in the year. The names at the top (in particular) are familiar leaders in this ranking.

For resource stocks, Stockhouse favorite Novo Resources Corp (TSX: V.NVO, OTCQB: NSRPF, Forum) continues to generate significant interest, even during the summer with the price of gold having recently slipped. Among recent news here was an exploration agreement with a company representing local aboriginal interests. There has also been considerable news on the Company’s Comet Well property.

Technology companies remain a tough sell at Stockhouse at the moment. Bullboard read totals are particularly anemic for this industry group.

The Healthcare Bullboard leaders are faring somewhat better in generating interest, although much of this is dominated by the large Stockhouse hub for ProMetic Life Sciences Inc (TSX: PLI, OTCQB: PFSCF, Forum). PLI has been bouncing back recently after a significant dip in share price earlier this year.

Current interest in our Energy Bullboard leaders is only marginally better than that for the Tech companies. While oil prices have been relatively strong through most of 2018, valuations for the oil & gas producers remain relatively weak – reflected in the sentiment for these companies.

For our Blockchain leaders, the news is even worse. Apart from HIVE Blockchain Technologies Ltd. (TSX: V.HIVE, OTCQB: HVBTF, Forum), interest in these companies is virtually non-existent.

The Stockhouse Industrials leaders are two, separate stories. There is Bombardier Inc (TSX: BBD.A, OTCQX: BDRBF, Forum). Then there is everyone else. Support for Bombardier is exceptionally strong right now, mirroring the most popular cannabis listings.

If Bombardier shareholders are having too much fun talking stocks to “go away”, who can blame them? BBD has tripled its share price off of its 52-week low, and while we’ve presented this chart recently, it’s a picture that many investors would be happy to see again.

After Bombardier, there is not much residual interest in Industrial stocks at this point in the summer. The Summertime Blues, or just weak markets? Investors can judge for themselves whether the current drop-off in Bullboard activity has more to do with the season or stock prices.
