Colombia still has mojo. Everyone I know in geology is either there right now kicking gold and copper rock or just back from the country.
“Colombia is surely like Peru was in about 1996. We are on a little gold hunt,” AQM Copper’s Tom Henricksen tells me today (Friday) as he is boarding a flight in Colombia.
Mr. Henricksen, chief Peru geologist, and Cesar Lopez are two of the folks who started AQM in Peru. AQM Copper (TSX: V.AQM, Stock Forum) is developing the Zafranal property in Peru. The 63-year-old prospector, “still huffing and puffing,” tells me he has been in Peru (and Colombia and elsewhere in South America) for the past five months.
Like many of his colleagues pouring over Colombia, Tom H. says he “cannot say too much because of the things I am up to here.” He adds, “I had 20 years with Rio Tinto, staking the Corani and Ollachea properties for them in Peru.” He says he is working as a consultant for “three private gold companies in different areas.”
“One thing for sure, there are still very difficult zones to work in Colombia,” he says about natives with machetes and guns. The country used to be South America’s most prolific gold producer until the 1940s, when violence, corruption, politics and drugs shriveled the mining business there.
In the past two weeks, several companies have staked new ground in Colombia … or gone public in Canada … or raised fresh cash. This is from our Ticker Trax:
CMJ: Bob Carrington, geologist and president of our Planetary Prospect Colombian Mines (TSX: V.CMJ, Stock Forum): “There will be a consistent news flow coming from us and I believe it will be pretty positive. Some pretty interesting things are developing and will be coming out shortly,” says Mr. Carrington, who is just back from Colombia and resides in Nevada. “Things are going ahead at a good pace with expanded drilling, geophysical and geochem programs at Yarumalito (in Antioquia, Colombia). We also have mapping, geophysics and possibly soon some drilling at Rio Negro, plus continued geochem and mapping at Venecia and initial recon at a new very interesting property called Mercedes. Work is also planned for (copper prospect) El Dovio later this summer.”
SPOTTING: Batero Gold (TSX: V.BAT, Stock Forum) on Canada’s Venture Exchange is freshly listed. This is geologist Rafael Alfonso Roa’s tiny company, to which I was introduced in January 2010, when he and a partner, Brandon Rook, called it Angus Resources.
Batero’s Quinchia property is not far from Medoro’s Marmato (TSX: V.MRS, Stock Forum) and AngloGold’s (NYSE: AU, Stock Forum) La Colosa. It has no connection to Seafield’s (TSX: V.SFF, Stock Forum) Quinchia in the same region of Colombia. The area around Quinchia also is home to Sunward’s Titiribi and Bellhaven Copper & Gold’s La Mina. Drill rigs are running at our Planetary Prospect Bellhaven’s La Mina, which I have seen and researched for subscribers.
At present, Bellhaven and Colombian Mines in Colombia are worthy of our interest. (We also are trying to track George Juilland’s Sunward Resources, which I have visited at Titiribi, and Ari Sussman’s Continental Gold (TSX: T.CNL, Stock Forum). On the ownership scale among the Colombia prospectors named here, we here at home hold CMJ, BHV and MRS. We track CMJ and Bellhaven for our paying Ticker Trax audience.
Dr. Paul Zweng at Bellhaven (TSX: V.BHV, Stock Forum) has made great strides in several months running Julio Benedetti’s Panama and Colombia-focused prospector. He has been interim CEO these past four months or so. Dr. Zweng’s property purchases, hiring of in-country geologists, channel sampling, mapping and magnetic, among other things, mark Bellhaven as perhaps the cheapest Colombia prospect with the most currency for increasing its value by a factor of 10 times or more. (We here at home are owners of Bellhaven shares at an average price that is two cents or so higher than the current stock price.)
ON TAP:Properties I have visited or are on tap for possible investor exploration for Ticker Trax includes Timberline Resources (AMEX: TLR, Stock Forum) and (TSX: V.TBR, Stock Forum) in Montana. Butte Highlands is the name of the fast-developing mine. In Sweden, Gold-Ore Resources (TSX: T.GOZ, Stock Forum) is of interest. Gold-Ore is about to record its one-millionth ounce of gold production. The mine is called Bjorkdal Gold Mine. We here at home own several thousand shares at a price that is about five cents Canadian higher than the current GOZ stock price. We own no Timberline. (Also: None of the companies in this specific article pay Stockhouse or Ticker Trax in exchange for coverage, research or preference as a Planetary Prospect.)
NEW ORLEANS: This autumn I will be making two or three appearances outside of prospect tours. One of them is in New Orleans, where I appear each year at Brien Lundin’s New Orleans Investment Conference.
