Peek-a-boo: It's the lime

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Overnight almost, we are seeing sharp ticks higher in select speculative resources: gold , silver and copper mostly. Many of the hottest this month are south of the USA border: Mexico. Colombia. Peru.

It must be the lime. For example:

“Always been a great company, and now the Ixtaca Zone numbers (in Mexico) have people really interested. I think it could really run here,” Mr. Day says. (Photo: Adrian and a friend of ours at dinner in D.C.)

Almaden reported the goods: 300 meters of 1 gram gold. The stock went nuts. But more prospectors than I’d care to count have come up with decent numbers this summer … and the stocks have gone nowhere. Antioquia Gold in Colombia (TSX: V.AGD, Stock Forum) is one.

Click to enlarge“We have the huevos, the pods, the eggs, lining up, but the company won’t get credit for an extended gold resource until we connect more dots,” says Robert Casaceli, a structural geologist who examined Rick Thibault’s Antioquia Gold and its thin-vein Cisneros pockets of mineral. The stock, which we purchased here at home after I viewed Cisneros twice this past winter and spring, has been pitiful in the face of steady and sturdy drill data.

The same holds true for Sandspring Resources Ltd. (TSX: V.SSP, Stock Forum), whose John Adams and family this very day are conducting a tour at Toroparu in British Guyana. We sent our Stockhouse editor Sean Mason down to poke around with Sandspring’s Abraham Drost, Wes Adams and crew. I bought the shares after having seen Toroparu myself: lots of copper and gold, some of it visible. Yet the stock has done nothing in the past three or four months.

  • Flip side of the coin: In Peru, copper prospector Antares Minerals (TSX: V.ANM, Stock Forum) and its Haquira copper project (net present value of $1 billion after-tax at $2.25 copper price and sicounted 8 percent) is getting respect. Next door, Xstrata (OTO: XSRAF, Stock Forum) and (OTO: XSRAY, Stock Forum) is gearing up for vast infrastructure on its Las Bambas copper property. I have viewed both projects. Antares shares, as foretold by CEO John Black to our Ticker Trax audience, has gained 40 per cent in a matter of days. (We do not own it here at home.)

“One of our most immediate challenges is to make the project as well known to the general investing public as it is to the world of companies interested in acquiring an asset of this quality,” Mr. Black tells me. “We are taking steps to answer this challenge with a near-term goal to see our market capital rise to a level more appropriate for a project like Haquira.”

  • In Mexico, First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX: T.FR, Stock Forum) has its mine operating earnings on full thruster. Up more than 600 percent for the quarter vs. a year ago. More lime for the silver coconuts down Mexico way. The stock pops 5 percent in a day (today – Monday). Someone saw this coming. In earlyu August the shares were $3.70 Canadian. Now they’re $4.40.
  • Others shaking the stupor of summer down lime way south of the border include Continental Gold Ltd. (TSX: T.CNL, Stock Forum). This is geologist Stuart Moller and Toronto financier Ari Sussman’s vast collection of Colombia gold properties. I have seen the Buritica property in Antioquia, Colombia, so I understand why CNL, with its stock now at a heady $4.40 Canadian, is headed toward premier status among a crowded collection of Colombian gold producers and prospectors.
  • Colombian prospectors of interest: Mercer Gold Corp. (OTC: BB: MRGP, Stock Forum) and its Guayabales property. I love the fact that Guayabales, which I have seen, is within throwing distance, figuratively, of rich El Marmato. Also, the interest of a longtime friend, geologist and former Haywood banker Edward Flood, intrigues me. (We here at home do not own it.) Gran Colombia Gold (TSX: V.TPR.H, Stock Forum), a new company fronted by Colombian financier Serafino Iacono, is front and center. As stated in the quarterly today from EL Marmato owner Medoro Resources (TSX: V.MRS, Stock Forum Medoro is in the process of completing an agreement with Gran Colombia under which Medoro and Gran Colombia will establish a joint venture “to operate and develop the Frontino Gold Mines gold assets, expected to be acquired by Gran Colombia later this week.” We have high hopes for the old and troubled Frontino Mine. Medoro’s shares, alas (which we have owned for ages), are not faring well these days. Neither is another El Marmato-area gold prospector and one of our Ticker Trax Planetary Prospects: Colombian Mines Corp. (TSX: V.CMJ, Stock Forum).

NEW ORLEANS: This autumn I will be making two or three appearances outside of prospect tours. One of them is in New Orleans, where I appear each year at Brien Lundin’s New Orleans Investment Conference.

If you’d like to join our Stockhouse and Ticker Trax audience at the late-October show, please register and pay up at this link: REGISTER FOR NEW ORLEANS. You get a large discount on the price at that address. It’s my favorite investment show – along with the longstanding San Francisco conference in November.

  • ON TAP:Properties I have visited or are on tap for further investor exploration for Ticker Trax include Timberline Resources (AMEX: TLR, Stock Forum) and (TSX: V.TBR, Stock Forum) in Montana. Butte Highlands is the name of the fast-developing mine. We own no Timberline shares. Also: Gold Ore Resources Ltd. (TSX: T.GOZ, Stock Forum) in Sweden is on our to-see list for early September. I own about 3,000 shares of Gold Ore at a price of 55 cents Canadian or so a share.
