These junior miners could bloom this spring

TORONTO– This coming week ranks as one of the most important for Canada-reporting miners and prospectors.

It’s the week moms and dads are freshly returned to their office suites from their kids’ spring breaks. This is why the mid-March week just passed was light on Venture and TSX big board filings/press releases.

“If a company has anyone at the top with a kid in grade school, they were out of town,” our own Sean Mason at Stockhouse’s Toronto office says. (An exception was Gold Canyon Resources’ (TSX: V.GCU, Stock Forum) seven-grams at Springpole in Ontario. Please see our coverage.)

Two other things influence this annual vacuum of developments for reporting miners. One is current events: the past week’s nuclear fallout from Japan pushed most discoveries and drill results off the ticker.

The other is the hangover from the annual PDAC mining and alcohol fest held in early March.

Several companies I try to track could unveil what might be potent developments – fresh economic assessments, new executives, long-awaited step-out drill results, strategic investors and so on -- this coming week. That is what we call a forward-looking statement, one that is highly speculative. As in could, or might. Please use caution.

Sandspring Resources (TSX: V.SSP, Stock Forum) is a company whose Toroparu gold and copper project in British Guyana I hope to visit a second time this spring. Both Sean Mason at Stockhouse in Toronto and I have seen Toroparu with our own eyes. It is a corker. Sandspring just published fresh assays that fine-tune geologic details for an open pit mine at its 2.5-million-indicated-gold-ounce Toroparu. I do not own the shares.

Click to enlargeTicker Trax subscribers know I expect developments from at least one and possibly two West Africa companies.

Golden Phoenix Minerals (OTC:BB: GPXM, Stock Forum) will see the return of CEO Thomas Klein to mainland North America from spring break (and a little beach business) in Hawaii. I will be seeing Mr. Klein to update developments at the multi-jurisdictional Golden Phoenix (Nevada, Peru, Shining Tree District in Ontario) this coming week.

Finally, for those who track board shuffles that are meaningful, we credit Jonathan Adwe and his Gold Standard Ventures (TSX: V.GV, Stock Forum) for installing fresh faces from the Seabridge Gold (TSX: T.SEA, Stock Forum) team. (This is Jonathan at Elko, Nevada, headquarters. – Thom Calandra photo)

David Mathewson is Gold Standard Ventures’ main geologist and VP of exploration. Mr. Mathewson convinced me he had a worthy model for targeting gold a few months ago at the company’s Railroad Project near Elko, Nevada. Please see our coverage: True Nevada Grit.

I think we might learn more about Gold Standard Ventures’ silver potential near its Railroad project. The shares, which I do not own, continue their three-month climb. Mr. Adwe today (Friday March 18) was in London, talking to asset managers. Why this 30-something father of four is not on spring break is a mystery to me.
