In the longer term ANS is going to leave a lot of people saying " I guess I should have bought some"  Hind sight is always 20/20.   The Company at it's height was $35 + with a lot smaller production than it is capable of  now.     Demand for OSB will out pace supply for 2013 and most of 14. Not expected to ballance out till ...more

yep, great week. I sold 20% of my holdings last day, and recouped all my original investment into cash. Now its all gravy. I can hold for a long time or till i see an exit strategy which may be 2 years down the road. I saw they have the year end results on tsxmoney and it does look like the rights offering vs doubling shares was a wash. ie. Total Equity doubled and # of outstanding ...more

35 bucks Louel the os shares a lot lot lower.Everything needs to be put in perspective. Some say it does not matter. It matters to me..Market cap is where its at..But yes the industry has a long way to go/I doubt its a flash in the pan. Many positive quarters coming for the ones that survived the bad times
Comment by estebancaballo on Mar 15, 2013 8:27pm
Yes.....I sold 30% over the week as it seemed to be getting too frothy and I wanted to cash in some of my truly excellent profits.....very hard to time these things!! In any event ANS is still one of my top holdings and will remain there......without ANS I wold be down for the year given the dismal performance of the mining stocks....so I am deeply grateful to ANS!! (The losses in the mining ...more

One thing about the $35+ all time high L....I think (but am not sure)  that the company was an entirely different animal in those days.....and that it was restructured so am not sure we can count those days as part of the current ANS's history.....if anyone recalls the restructuing (or whatever it was called) I would be grateful if you could fill me in on what happened as I was not ...more

I'm not promising it will hit there. But I don't think anyone expected West Fraser to hit $89.70 or CFP to get to over $20   As far back as I can see I can't find where they were ever that high before.   Canfor has a new majority shareholder and increased production capabilities the same as here.   WFT is also more efficient.   Due to Beetle ...more

I kind of agree with most of what you wrote however, one has to question when the Europeans will start to ship their high quality product to the Us market. I suspect If this market remain strong as it is for a few more months, the eastern seaboard  will be  flooded with German product. If it’s not already happening, it will happen and cool down the market .That’s the only cloud on the ...more

When ANS hit that 35.00 they had oustanding share count of 19 mil. Family owned the ainsworths expanded rapidly and were caught big time during the 08 crash. brookfield basically took the company over and pumped the share count to 90 mil. Good management over the down period saved ANS.

Ainsworth was a very well run company under the original owners.  The problem I think, was the down line generation may not have been properly groomed to assume total management.  Intern made some serious mistakes.  The difference in the amount of share float is notable but so is the size of the company.  Also there are a lot more institutions holding the shares.  ...more

A couple point on my view of ANS. ive been with ANS since 2001. I don't remember ANS hitting $35. The highest it got was ~$22. It shows $35 because of the stock dilution and consolidation in 2007-8. I think it was 3:1 and we got a whack of warrants. (caveat: i can't remember exact numbers) The big downfall for ANS then was this purchase https://www.iatp.org/news/potlatch-agrees-to-sell ...more

Yes but the pine kill has been a gold mine for this type of mill.As much as one states junk wood is limitless it does run out and demand higher prices.........Yes structural lumber mills less costly but still a big expense.......Does not hurt to have both sides covered.....
Comment by estebancaballo on Mar 16, 2013 8:51pm
Right so to compare apples to apples we would need to divide that 35 by about 4.5 to get the value per share after the dilution, correct? That would be about 7.78.....or am I missing something? Warrants?

ANS was 35 range in Feb/March 05 hitting a high March 11/05  of $36.49 closing that day at $35.37
Comment by louel on Mar 16, 2013 10:55pm
Your value would be right with the same number of mills.  Additional timber rights and operations have to be considered in to value before dividing by share count.   When you have $100 dollars divided by 10 people it is $10 each.   If you double the number of people and still only have $!00 then that is dilution equal to $5 each.  however if the value ...more
