Possible SONA competition?

What do you think?

OraQuick Coronavirus Rapid Antigen Self-Test on track for EUA submission and subsequent launch in the fourth quarter. OraSure is developing a rapid antigen self-test, designed to produce a result for active COVID-19 infection within minutes, with no instrumentation needed to interpret the results and no need to transport samples to a lab for processing, enabling the detection of COVID-19 infection anytime, anywhere. The development of the test is supported by $710,310 of funding from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The test is currently in human clinical testing. Although originally intended for use with oral fluid, this test has been modified to employ an easily and comfortably self-collected lower nostril sample in order to achieve the best possible accuracy. The Company fully expects to meet or exceed applicable FDA performance requirements, with EUA filing and subsequent commercial launch in the fourth quarter, pending regulatory approvals. To date, there are no COVID-19 tests for active infection which provide a result at the point of collection with no need for a diagnostic instrument to interpret the result.

Nope, during the FDA Townhall today they stated that saliva tests are "an incredibly challenging substrate" and they have already denied some because of performance. "Many have given up because it was too tough".
Comment by NorthBayStreet on Aug 05, 2020 9:54pm
But it states "self-collected lower nostril sample"
Comment by Cottrader on Aug 05, 2020 10:17pm
saliva based tests are difficult...avacta is trying to produce one and poor results, I believe sona is trying to do a 2.0 version and may be the only successful candidate because of its gold nanorods
Comment by Cottrader on Aug 05, 2020 10:15pm
what technology are they using to detect the virus via antigen? They have a long way to go...sonas test was in development for 10 years with gold nanorods...we welcome more test at point of care because Sona cannot keep 3uou with demand but they have ways to go...

There are 19 other products available on the market that qualify as rapid tests to measure antigen. 16 have CE mark, 3 are research use only. About half are lateral flow. The lateral flow assays are basically all based on the same prinicple. Gold conjugates, latex conjugates, etc, but there are a couple of rapid tests using way more sensitive methods (look into the time resolved fluorescence asay ...more

Thanks. I like to know the competition.
Comment by datawork on Aug 05, 2020 11:09pm
There are only 2 Covid 19 antigen tests with FDA approval. So I have no clue what you are talking about?
Comment by Beerzerker on Aug 05, 2020 11:37pm
Hi datawork, CD-IVD is not the same as FDA EUA or FDA 501K. CE is a self declared quality system. I'm just pointing out that there are other companies in the same space, and certianly some have their eye on the US market. It would be crazy not to. Take a look here: https://www.finddx.org/covid-19/pipeline/?avance=Commercialized&type=Rapid+diagnostic+tests&test_target=Antigen& ...more

Please do some DD...sona has been validated by MRIglobal, so they aren't as far along as Sona...also Sona has the cbat free gold nanorods that can detect the virus early and at low viral loads...key and important information in comparison to quidel whom has low accuracy and detects 5days later at higher viral loads only... Sonas test is fast and not "way lower" specificity and ...more

Thanks Beerzerker, you sound like you know this subject. Your last two paragraphs are well worth reading. Where do you think Sona is relative to the competition in POC antigen testing?
Comment by Beerzerker on Aug 06, 2020 5:55am
I think its a coin toss at this time. Their data is either going to be good or not. The MRI data sounds OK at this point, but it still doesn't have enough description to mean anything to me. And efforts to get a better description have been unanswered. So lets see what they come up with for their FDA EUA submission. If their field trial data is good, their product will sell well, especially ...more

Good post, Beerzerker. I've tried to raise some of these points here and on twitter a few times but it's generally a waste of time as you just get labeled a 'basher'. I still struggle to understand what exactly MRIGlobal have 'validated', and I suspect you feel the same. They seemingly generated a LoD using live virus (good), but all sensitivity data came from in house lab ...more

CE is a manufacturing standard. Let's revisit this subjet when ANY of these companies you are referencing are FDA certified.  Next

Datawork, it might be a bit late to the dance at that point no? The point of my post is the bring some perspective. Good luck!

U need to use the filter     manual and automated for other Rapid AG tests to show. Quidel,   Lingbio, BIohit and others will show. Hey datawork, so I think Abbott has FDA now... Do you want still want to talk about data? Seems Sona didn't have much to share today.
Comment by Cottrader on Aug 27, 2020 8:10pm
sonas time will come shortly as the best and only antigen point of care test...did you just read the Abbott headline also?
Comment by Beerzerker on Aug 27, 2020 8:25pm
No, just dug into the details of their test. It looks good.  But at least some of the manufacturing is being done in canada. Wouldn't want trump to hord it all... How can you say 'only ag POC test'??? this is EXACTLY what abbott got approved. Sona might be able to get some market, but Abbott will get the biggest share now, so I wouldn't be surprised if Sona ends up a penny ...more

Abbott is a point of care test? Fact check A) Abbott only works after 7 days of showing symtoms B) requires a prescription C) then a clia lab This doesn't contain the spread of the virus, this tells you that you already infected everyone, stay home for a few more days and take some vitamin c
Comment by Nicmoure5148234 on Aug 27, 2020 8:32pm
Abbott went under the CLIA route and sona is not. Different EUA streams with ours being more rigorous
Comment by Beerzerker on Aug 27, 2020 8:47pm
Proof that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing... CLIA lab or administed by a health care professional.  Picture this: A couple of nurses checking all the kids as they go into their American school... Labor day is in 9 days. Sona better have something by then.  Anyhow, good night yall. It's been interesting watching Sona and talking with all the fans.
Comment by Nicmoure5148234 on Aug 27, 2020 8:35pm
ABBOTT NEEDS A PRESCRIPTION !! U GET SICK AND WHEN U CANT BREATH ANYMORE U GO SEE UR DOCTOR AND HE PRESCRIBES A TEST FOR YOU .WTF!!!
