another Aquisition of a wood products...

asset prevalent  in Quebec and Ontario.

Canfor Corp. (CFP.TO) to buy Wood Products assets of Tembec (TMB.TO).
After Canfor decided to close it's historic Rustand and Tachoma mills in British Columbia, they will buy Tembec's Elko and Canal Flats Sawmills for about C$60 million! Canfor has determined that the capital investment plan on other facilities where smaller amounts of capital spending can realize significant improvements in cost performance and capacity!
The deal will include a long time agreement to provide for Tembec's northern bleached softwood pulpmill in Skookumchuch, BC, as Tembec plans to focus on it's core business of production of wood, pulp, papers, paperboard, and chemicals products.

Looks like there's a demand for forest products, especially in Eastern Canada.

You do understand that the mills that Canfor picked up are in Southeast British Columbia. No managment team in their right mind is looking at Eastern lumber assets at this time.

If that's the case...why did they close their Rustand and Tachoma mills in British Columbia? Doesn't make sense!

Its simple. CFP picked up Tembec assets because it provided an opportunity to diversify their fibre basket at a very attractive rate from both a $/M3 and $/MFBM. They picked up ~1 million M3 of AAC outside of Moutain Pine Beetle territory'. As for Tackama, this was a panel mill near the BC/Yukon border. Aside from the fact that the mill is in the middle ...more

Vicky: Rustad and Tackama have been down for three years. This latest word from Canfor is simply an announcement that those closures are now final. There is nothing unexpected in that.As House7575 says, the Tembec mills, which also have not been running for over two years, are much better positioned, both in mill operations and in timber supply, to serve the future of the North American lumber ...more

Madison and House 7575Check your information.Contrary to your post,  Tembec  2 southern BC mills are running pumping close to 400Mmfbm of high quality product unafected by MPB . These mills will be a great assets for CFP, improving their product mix. They haven't been down like you posted. whitewood

Whitewood, I didnt say the Tembec mills were closed. If you pay attention to the comma's in Maddison's statement it is clearly his statement. My statement, to which Maddison is referring is pasted below. Before telling someone to check their information, do the same. That said, we are all in agreement that the Tembec assets were a good deal for CFP.Its simple. CFP picked up Tembec assets ...more

Ah, right. I spoke to Linda Coates, VP Communication and Public Affairs when the announcement was made and mistook her statement that "some Tembec mills are running, Tembec is committed to sawmills in Ontario and Quebec". I should have double-checked my own data!Apologies for that confusion.-Madison's

Thanks for the clarification Madison...and a special thanks to all the naysayers here, so I was able to pick up shares of Eacom for much less than I anticipated! www.eacom.ca Ontario and Quebec are especially well forested, as the bulk of logging for wood products was done in BC...and now, even though trees in Northern areas of Ontario and Quebec are long and narrow by comparison...they ...more
