Aurora's made biggest strategic mistake of all Players

Out of spite I won't buy Aurora product if they screw the HIP!

This article from earlier in the year is what its all about:

https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/music/2017/05/30/tragically-hip-partnering-with-medical-marijuana-company.html

This kind of PR and marketing is incredibly valuable short term following legalization and medium and long term.  Honestly think ACB is thinking too small or with greedy little fingers.  It's like they don't realize nobody cares if they buy "Aurora" but there is a Canadian emotional attachment to the HIP.  How much does Aurora think its going to cost them to build a Brand Canadians and others in the world have a connection with.  Seriously,  Aurora is stupid on this one.
I don't even care at this point if Aurora walks or the deal falls through.  Newstock has such value because of the immediate emotional connection that will occur as soon as recreational marijuana is legalized...What are you going to buy - Gord Downie's HIP product and support a real canadian legend and in some ways hero, or Aurora....?  Let's imagine what Canada Day is going to look like right now and what is going to grab the media spotlight at those celebrations. How many of you are hearing the HIP music playing in the background and people proudly supporting the legalized product Gord Downie endorsed?

Aurora, you've gotten greedy and its gonna bite you if you don't smarten up.  I'm willing to bet there is even some conversations happening right now behind the seens with Cannimed from other players.

In short I think you're vastly overrating the value of the "PR" in this partnership, and people's buying habits. Brand loyalty in this manner is not going to be as big of a factor in initial sales - for the curious and cautious consumer public, the last thing they'll care about is if the strain of cannabis they're purchasing is tied to a music group.  Don't get ...more

I agree with you to some extent with the point that initial sales will be large regardless...That is a simple economic supply and demand issue for sure. But Aurora doesn't have anything to separate itself beyond year 1.  And it certainly isn't likely to get sales in Year 1 and 2 to justify its diluted and inflated share price.  It doesn't have a Brand. Simple reality of ...more

One more addition to my previous comments.   I don't think the value is in a music group.  It is a "Canadian" group that spent the last year speaking up about cancer, medical uses of marijuana, and other Canadian issues such as First Nations that bring us all together.  It is about a group that is directly tied to a friendship with the sitting Prime Minister ...more

Not that I disagree with you sentimentally (huge Hip fan here) but the economic benefits of the 'brand' - I just don't see it more than a "niche".  Regarding overall brand power and Aurora's potential, there's probably points for debate there, but I think it's easy enough to say that for companies like Aurora and Canopy their size and reputation alone will ...more

I agree with everything in your post with one exception and it is the biggest debate surrounding the ACB, Cannimed, Newstrike deals... Cannimed has the trust of the government as the longest serving player in the legal medical market.  Cannimed has so much trust that another player (Newstrike)  that somehow drew the partnership of the largest spokesperson for Medical Marijuana to date in ...more

It puppito again, getting nowhere fast. Still bashing ACB.  Must be very afraid as he is getting dumped by CMED (to join ACB) like an abusive boyfriend getting kicked to the curb. The writing is on the wall, ACB will control CMED.  If not, expect CMED to sink into oblivion. And I like CMED.  Own equal shares of ACB and CMED.  I look a the big picture.  Together, we will ...more

Well said, and Newstrike will go back to being a  nostalgic penny stock that may or may not have been able to grab some traction had celebrity branding been permitted from a band that  for all intensive purposes is no longer. Rip Gordie

Perhaps that is true...I just don't believe it.  They will have there license as well as some very connected people with deep pockets associated with them.  If this deal falls through I believe there is something else in the wings....MYM, ABCANN, TWEED.... Again, the value isn't in the "band".  It is in the story that the band was a part of this past year.  ...more

I haven't bashed ACB at all.  My opinion is simply that Aurora has made a strategic mistake.  I believe all 3 companies would be better off together.  That being said, I believe Cannimed would be better off partnering with Newstrike and continuing to build other positive business relationships that will undoubtedly result and entertaining or pursuing other opportunities that are ...more
