I think this buy back is a really smart move

This will put the shorters and naysayers on notice that Kinross is able and ready to defend the share price over the next three years. Keeping the dividend and growing the business and buying back shares should mean a much higher share price in the future.

The question is whether Kinross should have held cash in strategic reserve rather than trying to return it to shareholders. Sure, we all enjoy a share buyback. But more than that, at least for us long term holders, overall stability and reserves is more important.

I am a long time shareholder and your point is also valid. I have been here when Tye  Burke was the CEO and made all of those bone head aquisisions that resulted in a huge delusion of the shares for very little return. Then we had the Russian fire sale that further deprecated the value of Kinross's share price. The fact that they have made this decision to buy back a boat load of shares ...more

Stockstarker, you are spot on Tye  Burke started the dilapidation of K and our shareholder value. He did sweet talk many institutional investors to hang in while the company plummeted.
