Probably not gonna happen

I have been following the Pebble saga  since its discovery. Being pretty far removed from Alaska, all I could basically do was try to keep up with items in the news. Sometimes over the years there was plenty of news. Mostly it was about the controversy between mining interests and environmental interests.
Several years ago, I was able to fulfill a bucket list dream I had since I was a child. That being to go fly fishing in Alaska. Pebble was not particularly on my mind. Of course I knew that there was a perceived threat to Bristol Bay, and the outfitting lodge I stayed at was on the river that drains Lake lliamna into Bristol Bay. The lake is like an inland sea. There are many, many creeks that feed into the lake and each day we would fly into a different one in a 6 passenger Havilland Beaver. On one of those days, I happen to be flown in and guided by the owner of the lodge. The name of the creek was the lower Talaariq. It translates from the Yup'ik dialect to rainbow trout. Little did I realize until later that the creek was famous for its monster rainbows. I was fortunate to catch and release a couple of those. As I walked with John (the owner) further upstream we got a good look at the headwaters. Much to my surprise, he pointed that way and said "That's where they want to build the mine". He seemed to feel or know that I knew a lot about it.
I tell of this incident because I don't think the people involved with stewarding the natural resources in the area would ever stand for allowing the Pebble project to move forward. I may be wrong, and there are some diehards that are hanging on to the prospect of the mine coming to fruition, but I seriously doubt that it  will ever happen.

More importantly, the current denied mine plan is uneconomic and the entire low-grade resource may be uneconomic to develop.   No proven/probable RESERVES established per a compliant third-party Feasibility Study.  Modifying Factors allowed. When will another meaningless Preliminary Economic Assessment be released?

After doing some reasearch into this mine I have to agree with you about the pristine waterways . I refuse to buy into this mine project and become a walking contradiction regarding clean water and economic interests. I would also advise anyone else to do some reading and not listen to the anti mine / pro mine drivel people spew on here. DDYD and find out for yourself . I’m outa this page .

I chose to bring this post back up from March 4th to make a point. The Pebble Project is probably viable. There will be winners and losers. Some might argue that if it is a no go, Alaska loses. Personally, I think it would be in the best interest of the many who value the few special places left in the U.S. that it not go forward. Lake Illiama and its environs represent one of the most pristine ...more

The project is uneconomic until a compliant Pre or Final Feasibilty Study, with Modifying Factors, is completed and proven/probable mineral RESERVES are publicly disclosed. Not happening with the current and continued to be denied mine plan is resubmitted by a real mining company.

You might be right, but Alaska and the rest of us lose.  Instead we can rely on our green metal future from China, Russia and 3rd world countries.  Who are definitely not green miners, actually the worst.  There isn't a modern mine in North America that isn't being responsibly managed and remediated on closing.  Alaska is one hudge empty pristine area, as it should be.& ...more
