Let's say Trump puts tariffs on imported oil.  It'll protect the industry domestically but all exports (and as you've said they are the largest export) would need to be sold at the global rate.  So tarriffs, while helping domestically do nothing to support the oil and gas industry as it ralates to it's largest export.  Which is why OPEC has leverage to ask for North ...more

I guess what your peabrain isn't catching onto is the creation of a captive market for North American oil - high-cost North American oil. The price will have to rise to equal cost recovery and a profit margin. North America's shale oil resources become viable when the Bbl price is above $95/Bbl....that is the North American target you have to shoot for. And even if there are tariffs ...more

they can still import from Canada, Mexico and South america including Brazil. US exports mostly to Canada, Mexico, Japan and South Korea. They cna push Japan and South Korea to buy their oil because of North Korea issue and they can also negotiate with China in part of their US China trade talks

Of course that would require competitive pricing with Saudi and Russian oil, which effectively renders North America's high-cost oil non-price competitive to importers in SK, China, and others. Oil from elsewhere in the America's will also be tariffed because it reflects the global price, if it's produced at all. The tariffs can only apply to the US, and even then there's no ...more
