There is something to be said for having a bad quarter and deciding to take your lumps all at once.  It's still early in the day but maybe this is being taken for what it appears to be... a quarter where they eat it, yeah its horrific but if it's gonna be bad might as well be horrible and if it means better days to come, maybe the market is willing to accept it. Time will tell

That they have a huge write down is no more surprising that the sun rising in the east.  It won't be surprising eiither in a year or 5 if and when the oil price rise, they will have a huge gain.  All part of the game called GAAP accounting.
