12:28p ET December 20, 2012 (Benzinga)

Clinton Group, Inc. announced today that it has sent a letter to the board of directors ofStillwater Mining Company (NYSE: SWC) demanding changes to the strategy,operations and management of the Company. Clinton Group owns a significantstake in the Company.

The letter critiques the current management team and Board for a series ofstrategic missteps and bad acquisitions; operating with a bloated coststructure and marketing budget; and for issuing a high cost-of-capitalconvertible bond in October. The letter goes on to demand the Board take sevensteps to improve the cash flow and operations of the business.

The letter also expresses the Clinton Group's view that the Company isundervalued and that taking the steps outlined in the letter can helpstockholders realize fair value for the stock. The Clinton Group's valuationanalysis concludes that fair value is approximately $21-23 per share.

I also agree with the Clinton concerns.  Finally someone with clout that comes out and brings to task the BOD and management.  I would focus on all points except for the Canadian Pd assets.  I believe that this asset is in-line with their core mission.  Its acquisition will ultimately strenghten their producing base.  Other satellite deposits will become available with ...more

Agree serge! SWC should stay out of foreign countries! P.S. I don't consider Canada "foreign". They are our good neighbors and excellent allies!

  Hopefully Clinton Group will have some strong allies to get SWC on track. The Canadian open pit mine has a short payback with a minimum ten year life span. Perhaps 15 as new pockets open up. There is both PGM's and Ag as well as Au in the site plus a large amount of copper that would fund the mine. Overall the past engineering ...more

Agree. NA assets should be kept and development focused nearby not in far off hostile (geographically and politically) lands!
