ALA vs AQN

I find it quite interesting that there's a number of pumpers that argue that ALA is a better holding than AQN. I really think that's quite a JOKE!!.

I just checked the returns for the two over various periods. The one that is the most intersting to me is the 10 year as my wife & I have held both for around that long. AQN is +301,73% abd ALA is -17.81%.

Oh yeah, that ALA is quite the winner alright.   :-)

Here's the table from RBC DI below.

Also, AQN has way better management and way better assets so a much brighter future. I still contend that the WGL assets are a mess and in need of some huge maintenace dollars. The only good thing about ALA is RIPET.

Ciao

Yes you hit the nail on the head, but  AQN  was much worse situation in pass, and now doing  well that Altagas will be better than  now ,I think better days ahead

Relax, take it easy, little pain for big gain, the former  CEO and the board are STUPID, NOW is different situation, just give them a chance to improve and show the prove.

Look at North Land Power,  a year ago was 20.52 Now 39.37 Almost Double, that could happen to ALTAGAS stock

I don't think so, npi is in a favorable sector, with a great organic growth pipeline. I do believe ala has upside from here.
Comment by Teccing on Sep 21, 2020 2:50pm
I agree, ala is directionless, need to refocus on long term organic growth, divest of higher maintenance assets.

Hey Tec How's things in Parksville these days? How's the investing going? My wife & I very rarely sell/trim anything but ALA has managed to get into that category. So far we've had 2 main ALA trims - 1200 @ $20.18 and 450 @ $16.23. Some of this went to the kids as an early inheritance and some went to CPX. We have plans to sell another 1050 ALA and buy another 500 CPX. I sure ...more

Parksville has been great, mostly for escaping reality. Being out on my boat I forget the silliness of covid, , ottawa, trudeau. Fishing was pretty amazing, a lot of 3, and 4 year old spring salmon. On the investment front I will continue to move my investments outside canada, where my investment are respected. Tired of government, and banks targeting my retirement savings. I have been doing well ...more

I really like that you share the facts and share useful information.  I certainly have benefited from your posts . Couple of points worth considering : You are absolutely correct based on your experience that AQN returned 3X over last decade compared to ALA that yielded -ve return  Did you consider the dividend paid while calculating return ? ALA before cutting the dividend was ...more

Hey B2T Thanks on the reply and nice comments. Generally AQN has done better than ALA across most time periods. Anyone that would have gotten a better return from ALA would have had to have very good timing. The returns I reported exclude the dividends. AQN has also paid a very nice divy over the years. When we first bought it in Nov, 2011 at $5.55, the divy was $0.28/yr which was a 5.04% yield ...more

Before you take any advice from Gas-X, you should ask him how his ENB is doing.

A little follow-up from my Sept 21 post on ALA vs AQN. I know this is only a very short time period but I think it is indicative of the two companies and worth some thought from current ALA holders.   20.09.21 20.10.02 Diff% AQN 18.61 19.63 5.48 ALA 16.38 15.99 -2 ...more

May I  say ,that I  know  Aqn for over 25y, and aqn was much worse situation than  ALTAGAS, even they try to sale aqn in pass,  no one wants to buy it, she was 12D then 10 then drops to 1.43d look at it today, in that time financial advisor ask me to sale aqn stock, I refuse and hang on it, I have said to him, that, anything on floor can't go below that, then said to ...more
