Woke, QC tax etc

Hi Woke, I won't go too far into the Quebec versus rest of Canada issue.

I will tell you it isn't as rosy as you might think.

We have some relatives just outside of Montreal and one of the husband's has thought about relocating to Ontario due to the stupid taxes in Quebec. Sure University costs are cheaper but consider this....try paying this for 15 years I think the below you're still behind with the discount on education.

2021 Taxes for Single Income Family, 2 Children Over 6 and Under 17 Years of Age

Employment income combined family Gross

$175,000 (87,500 each)

Alberta provincial taxes $51,588
Quebec provincial taxes $66,910

Alberta sales tax 5% GST
Quebec sales tax 14.975% GST/QST

Again not defending the fed....but Quebec tax payers get screwed just like the rest of us. Politicians take peoples money everywhere LOL

Equalization payments has seen Alberta give the rest of the country well over 600 BILLION more than they got back. Albertans actually don't even mind. What pis*es them off the most is that if they had more pipelines they could actually help the country even more. But to top it all there is nothing worst than a QC politician saying they want nothing to do with Alberta oil.

The CHOICE to be socialist is expensive, despite receiving over $7 billion a year in transfers.   $7 a day daycare and massive social programs are also subsidized by the rest of the country.  They'll get no sorrow from me.

The discussion around equalization is far more nuanced than adding up dollars. Politicians cite the 600 number, but it is political spin. If asxa young man, I migrate to Alberta, make good wages, and spend my career there, all the cumulative tax money I paid (income taxes, get, gas taxes etc) is considered as "Alberta" money. When I retire, if I move home to my native PEi let's say ...more

LOL, Thats the weakest argument yet. Alberta has transferred more than 600 BILLION than they have received and whether you stay in Alberta or leave or never set foot in Alberta your whole life it has no effect on your cpp or your oas.Albertan's, like ALL working Canadians pay income taxes and cpp directly off of their pay cheque with the normal share going to the feds and the provinces, this ...more

one of the more prominent scholars on the subject of equalization is Alberta's Trevor Tombe. You can read some of his thoughts on the subject here. https://www.policyschool.ca/news/why-equalization-is-not-unfair-to-alberta/
Comment by dllscwbysfn on Aug 14, 2022 11:54am
This article does not support your argument. Why is it so difficult for people to admit that Alberta has carried this country on its resources. Albertan's generally do not mind paying the equalization as we are all Canadians. However they can not stand it when QC politicians say they dont want a pipeline or their oil. They only want the payments. The system is flawed based on total tax only ...more

So you trot out CBC columnist Trevor Tombe?  FFS that is priceless!!!   LMAOROTFL!!!!

So my last comments on the subject. Lets assume just for fun that the equalization program never happened. Then the question would be, would Alberta be ahead by over 600 billion, yes or no?
Comment by TheWokeLemming on Aug 14, 2022 12:39pm
Disc you're arguing with a CBC fan.   That's all I needed to know to end the conversation.   I'm always amazed how easy it is for the rest of the nation to consider Alberta as their feeding trough.   Without Alberta money this nation would be anemic.   It's so ironic that Justin Trudeau is shutting down the industry that his family fortune came from.   I& ...more

the man has an undergrad degree from Simon Fraser, a PhD in economics and teaches university in Calgary. He's done extensive research on equalization and written at length about it. Read a little of his material.

LOL.   Can you see your bowels with your head so far up there?   Doubling down with more ignorance doesn't make your argument any stronger.

On that note, the younger, hard working Albertans don't pull on the Health Care system as much as the retired(x Oil patch) Easterners...........The formula must take into account the Provinces average age and incomes per family....
