RE:RE:It ain't a rosey outlookWhen lumber prices are high. The logger and trucking do not share in the higher prices. Only the timber license owner profits. The logger and trucker work on contract. Price is set by the mills for each individual logging block. Trucks work on a Ton/Hour production rate.
A few mills pay teir loggers by the tonne, But most are contracted by the Cubic meter. And their contract is limited to gross amount they are allowed to log and deliver on an annual basis. The amount is set number of truckloads per day they are allowed to ship to the sort or mill.
The only effect lumber prices have on loggers and truck loggers is when lumber price falls The mills curtail production and the contractors production volume is reduced or they are shut down till the mill decides to put them back to work again or they look for a new job,
Being a logging contractor is a totally different world than that of a working stiff. Contractors and log Truckers can be dismissed at the drop of a hat with no recourse. They are classified by government law as independents and have no rights to join a union. It is actually illegal.. .
The workers employed by a contractor may unionize but the contractors themselves, their businesses cannot.
