The only way to deprive them of your shares is if you ask them to send you the share certificates home. But in this case you could not buy and sell them through the internet. Only if all investors asked for the share certicates, could put the shorts in jeopardy. But even then, the investment houses could lend them shares from their own inventory and depress the market price of a stock. And the reason we don't aske the Investment houses to send us the share certificats is either because we want to trade the stock or get rid of it in a moments notice. Electronic trading is here to stay and thus the shorts are elated. GL
