Regardless of the exact timing or nature of the solution, however, the cobalt issue is one that affects current battery supply chains and will likely continue to do so until technological breakthroughs are achieved. Battery storage has long been regarded as the “last frontiers” of fully integrated renewable energy systems. Without them, duck curves will remain a problem and renewable energy will remain largely a curiosity. But with them, renewable energy becomes a dispatchable resource, and can begin to displace hydrocarbon power sources on a truly societal scale.

I have commented on this before as it seems pretty ridiculous to spend millions and millions on elimintaing cobalt which amounts to about 15 pounds per car battery. Even if cobalt tripled in price you would be adding about $500 bucks per car. Hardly seems worth the effort., and then the other metals rise and offset your new savings. ....but maybe its for the child labor. Cobalt must be the red ...more

We both have made this point....no question....it's a red herring, but created by whom? And why ? With so many other considerations to be made as to how to save production costs somehow there is focus on this point....like efficiency of electric motors.  I am sure that the production cost of making an ev is far less than a gas job the concept of the cost of ev vs gas or diesel is also a ...more
