"According to the Wek’ezh Land and Water Board (Board) records, Land Use Permit W2016C0002 (Permit) for the NICO Project in the Hislop and Lou Lake areas (Project) will expire on March 23, 2023.

As per subsection 26(6) of the Mackenzie Valley Land Use Regulations (MVLUR), no further extensions to the term of this Permit will be considered.

1 Site restoration, clean up, and removal of equipment, materials, buildings, etc. must be completed before the Permit expires."

This has been subject to legal action by the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines as it is not codified in law nor regulation, but is common practice by the Board.  Very poor regulatory system that is run by unelected officials purportedly representing the land owners.  The problem is that the Tlich can't change this without a big push by the other FN groups and the Federal Government ...more
