Your decision to sell your entire portfolio for the reasons mentioned , make total sense to me.I have an acquaintance who swears by the use of margin , but it is a strategy l have never employed as the risk is too great for my liking , l don't want an unexpected margin call and l can only think that the interest rate you must be paying today really mitigates the possible returns.I know the person l referred too has assembled quite a portfolio over the last 4 decades but when he mentioned carrying more than 2 million in margin on a 6 million portfolio it gave me a shudder right down my back.Each to their own , it seems.

Hi NobleHouse... it is scary! Q-trade charges me 7.5% for CDN margin, and 9% for US margin (which I only use for small time option trading)... it has been totally worth it for the last 5 months, where the portfolio has literally doubled from the October lows.. Sure wasn't worth it when my portfolio went down 40% from Labour Day to Halloween last year! I am now in this weird balancing act ...more
