First Quantum suspends commercial production at Panama

Kitco News

After civil discontent and losing its court case, First Quantum Minerals (TSX: FM) said today it is suspending commercial production at its Cobre Panama mine.

Today the Panama supreme court ruled against Law 406, which approved a new mining concession contract for First Quantum's Cobre Panama mine, which it received in October. The miner has faced anger and protests. Earlier this month, the company said that a blockade prevented supplies from reaching the mine and was hampering production.

The company said it is applying for a program of Preservation and Safe Maintenance to ensure the compliance and environmental integrity of the site, preservation of the assets, and safe maintenance of the plant and facilities.

The ruling will impact global copper supply. In 2022 the mine produced 350,438 tonnes of copper ranking the company as a top ten copper miner.
