Fatality Kamoa-Kakula - Halt on underground mining operation

Hopefully the investigation resumes quickly so that Ivanhoe can address the security issues/and production can be restarted. The DRC press is now looking more into the accident questioning safety standards, and also quoting a 2021 fatality at KK. I had not noticed at the time in April 2021: https://congovirtuel.com/information/rdc-cuivre-un-accident-fatal-cause-un-mort-a-la-mine-de-kamoa-kakula/

Production hasn't stopped, they are just running the concentrators off the stockpiles and aren't pulling ore from underground.  Sadly, mining is a dangerous business.  Hopefully, they continually improve operational safety.

This is now the 3rd fatality in roughly 2 years (this is the 3rd one:https://www.mining.com/fatal-accident-at-ivanhoes-kamoa-kakula-mine-in-congo/ : 2021, 2022 and 2023, and this points to the issue that maybe not enough has been done on the safety side/underground works. They will now really need to fix these safety issues before the DRC authorities take action and start a fully fledged ...more

I know facts aren't Donald's forte, but all 3 of IVN's projects have seen large improvements in safety records over the last 3 years with the 2 projects in the DRC scoring significantly better than the industry average. No one is downplaying the seriousness of workplace accidents and the need to constantly improve, but this is unfortunately a common aspect of the business, particularly ...more

We are talking about "deaths" not "workplace accidents"; and "death" is not a "common aspect of the business, particularly in places like Africa", I doubt that anyone within Ivanhoe or RF would describe this in such terms as you did. KK fatalities go back to 2019; Platreef in 2020. So, any way you take this: IVN as a business has to implement very high ...more

Again, Donald,  you are out to lunch on what you are talking about.  Death is unfortunately incredibly common in mining in Africa for numerous reasons.  In South Africa alone, they have 50-70 mining deaths a year.  When you have over 10,000-15000 employees building a huge operation at breakneck speed, this happens.   In less regulated mining operations in the DRC ...more
