I'm reminded of a visit to the Pinson mine north of

Golconda with a group from the Mackay School of Mines many years ago.  Standing at the edge of the OP, our guide, a young Canadian geologist laughed when waving his arm toward the vista of the Northern Nevada landscape, and explained that , "It's not like were mining Yosemite , Ha, ha, ha!
 
Seems like arrogance and stupidity is not an exclusive of the U.S.
