Expected that the shorts would start closing off some of their positions.

Gotta be impressed with their nerves of steel.

Sellers are drying up.

Oops, I was wrong.  We still have sellers out there. Likely disappointed that after 6 months, MRT.un maintained thier their distribution of 2 cents a month rather than increase it.  I was expecting them to raise it to 4 cents at the very least. REITS have to distribute their taxable portion of income.   Although they will generate at least $1 of cash flow, their taxable ...more

As I understand, the trust must distribute most of its taxable earnings.  The cash flow statistics such as FFO and AFFO are not a factor in determining the required distributions.  Nor are the IFRS earnings relevant (these include writedowns that are not a factor in taxable earnings). Their Website, shows the annual break down of the their distribution into taxable and non taxable. Over many years they distributed $0.96 per year.  And the taxable portion was generally half, except for a couple of years....i believe, when Sears left and they had to reconfigure the space and had huge one time expense they could write off. Looks like over 2 million shares still shorted as of Aug 15, and daily volume is really low. This could be interesting.
