Market values Brazilian corn, says Abramilho

The Brazilian corn remains valued in the international market, which helps to explain the rise in exports recorded cereal and March this year. The evaluation was made by the Brazilian Association of Corn Producers (Abramilho).

Last month, the volume shipped was 605.3 thousand tons, more than double that registered in the same month in 2017. Revenues from these exports also more than doubled, according to data from the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services ( MDIC). It was US $ 105.4 million in March 2018.

In the first quarter of the year, they were 4.881 million tons, up 123.8% from January-March 2017. Exporters' revenues grew 107.7% in the same comparison, totaling US $ 774.53 million .

Government data also show an increase in maize's share of Brazilian exports. In the first quarter of 2017, the value of foreign sales of cereal accounted for 0.74% of the country's total. Between January and March of this year, this proportion was 1.42%.

For former Minister Alysson Paolinelli, president of the Association, the recognized quality and the favorable exchange rate have helped in the performance. There is also a positive expectation of the entity in relation to the Mexican market, a major global consumer of maize and that it is having difficulty purchasing the cereal produced in the United States.

Record

Positive performance in the first quarter follows a record high in corn exports, according to the Association, also based on data from the federal government. Shipments in 2017 totaled 29.25 million tons of cereal, an increase of 33.8% over 2016 and 1.2% over 2015, the previous record.

Among the major buying countries last year were Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea and Malaysia with $ 1.82 billion. Another big buyer is Iran with $ 782.61 million. In Europe, one of the main buyers is Spain with $ 436.93 million
