People do look at the land mass affected but it doesn't take much land mass to cause a lot of damage. Look at Mount Polley mine disaster, not a lot of land mass but the destruction to the waterways due to catastrophic spill of toxic waste, including arsenic, lead, mercury, selenium and phosphorus was and still is painful to see. Mother nature will do its part in the recovery but it will never be the same for decades to come.
The mining industry will only grow in Canada and it needs to limit its emissions, chemical use and impacts to nearby water sources. The mining industry, needs to tighten up its environmental impacts considerablely in Canada so we don't have repeats of Mount Polley.
The oil industry is the whipping boy right now but the mining industry better
tighten up their environmental impacts, as they will front and center as more mining occurs within Canada.
