old saying !

Bull$hit walks !  ( LOL) A  globe & mail story Friday 8 stating Ontario to increase use of GAS FIRED POWER PLANTS for ENERGY . It just can't be ,  with all those wind mills ,solar panels ,hot air liberals . WOW ! It's funny how things change when you get hungry and cold .                                                Here in Alberta we had very cheap power for many many years and than came along the NUTJOB & her NDP party shutting down the coal fired power plants , turning them into gas fired plants at higher cost . So now we ship more coal to China & India so they have cheaper power . All power bills are gone up tripple here ,so a lot less money for folks trying to make ends meet .  BCRNW

Yeah but I  but I haven't seen Ontario have a smog day since they shut down coal plants and Alberta's kids just might not die from asthma as much as they used to. GLTA

It gets way funnier for mr LOL. Alberta isn't exporting squat. 9.6 million tonnes was TOTAL production. Half of that was steel making grade. So not even 5 million tonnes is produced. Most probably goes elsewhere in Canada, maybe some us used somewhere for something in Alberta and whatever is left falls over the border into the USA. For context and perspective, India alone consumes almost 1 ...more

thanks Max for the reply and I have no hard feelings , what happened here with my post was i started to rant . for the last 4 months or so it seems all i read on energy was the war and other country's starting to use coal again . I understand the little bit of thermo coal that Alberta ships is about a grain of sand in a mason jar ! That said , China and India uses around 5,283 MT thermo coal ...more

The plants Alberta closed were brand new plants with the latest particulate filters. Not a great comparison to what Ontatio was running. I am no advocate for Coal, but taking an approach of what has it done for me lately would have seen the Oilsands and Natural gas sectors gutted in 2018-2020. During that periods the entire primary sector of the economy was dying on a vine due to TC forcing Aeco ...more

May as well throw a nuclear reactor into the mix. Talk about short sighted shooting of oneself in the foot . I hear it's zero carbon emissions and as a side gig, there's nuclear medicine and weapons.  Low and behold athabasca holds not just some of the worlds largest oil sands properties, it also holds one of, or the, largest uranium resource. So, why bother with dirty old coal is a ...more

Enjoying all the feedback and yes the coal plant on Lakeview in Mississauga  was my first large EYE sore , And coming from the Country  I said to myself WTF !   Was I in for a surprise when I got up in the Sudbury basin moonscape area . Of coarse a little trip down south and all the farmers were still using DDT , Ontario was just a good old wasteland pouring polluted water in ...more

I am not a fan of nuclear either but I would not snap my fingers and shut it down either.  The Germans were kneejerk reacting to the the Fukushima accident and the environmental and financial repercussions of such an accident.  Unfortunatelythey are paying for their lack of fortitude and foresight.  It looks like Ontario is going to embrace nuclear further (not my first choice). 1) you're missing the obvious explanation for the apparent disparity in health care costs for Ontario vs alberta. It's fun with statistics and gerrymandering of results to suit each provinces purpose. Ontario was justifying shutting down the cheap, paid for coal plants and the huge spending boondoggle to line pockets building gas plants. Billions upon billions to e spent meant they needed ...more

Just seems like yesterday when Alberta had their first female premier called Alleycat Reddog and  there was decussion than about a Nuclear Reactor  in the Peace River area . The power was to be used for the oil sands operations ,etc  The YELLOW CAKE for the mix was to be mined in the Athabasca basin in Saskatchewan . It all went sideways when the Ragdoll Nutjob and Trudope showed up ...more

Yup a divi paid and a new divi announced.  I don't know why all stocks do not pay monthly. It seems like a very civilised way to do business.   If I was Alberta I would stick with wind, NG and carbon sequestration.  It also seems very civilised. GLTY and all

I second that getting my dividends from all companys monthly . I think it would be easier in retirement doing your expenses etc . Have a great weekend . BCRNW

On the other hand .....  I don't need the cash so I usually let it build a few months across all holdings until I have enough cash to buy a chunk of something I own, or maybe start a position in a new name. Lumpy quarterly payments would make reinvesting easier. I never asked my broker but does anyone know if the company offers a drip with a small discount on the reinvested shares? Back ...more

If you are not paying a commision you can reinvest monthly without a penality and now your new shares earn div...the power of compounding can be significant.  I prefer to time my own buys rather than a drip.  I am a control freak and assume most here are too or they would let their financial advisers do their investing for them which would greatly reduce the need for these types of ...more

Dividends are nice and I think simply assist in the process of being patient, because unless you have $100ks of thousands invested, the dividends are hardly filling the gas tank per month let alone something to get excited about. The real reason we are all here is for long term capital appreciation as we all believe the SP is going to be consistently above $20 in the next couple years.

All true if you're after dividends. My preference for all of them remains the same. Debt, then buybacks. That will drive the next double in stock price for the whole industry. If there's anything left, sure send it to shareholders before it burns a hole in mgmt pockets and they blow it on something stupid.
Comment by Quintessential1 on Oct 16, 2022 10:28am
LOL.  As in VET's case an acquisition that, well not necessarily being stupid, did manage to add to debt instead of reducing it and kind of irked me considering it wasn't a Corrib type value deal. For PEY the debt reduction is paramount.  The dividend yield is cool with me.  I just like it monthly. GLTY and all longs
