RE:IPA does very well against Microsoft at PTAB I think this highlights the need for having a portfolio of patents that covers technologies. With the PTAB acting as a patent death squad, you need many patents with several claims covering the technology. They will kill most patents and claims, but it is hard to kill 6 patents and all their claims.
The more relevant point here is that the market is still providing zero value for any of WiLans patents. With the expected cash on hand plus the value of IRD (assuming no growth in IRD), WiLan is still valued at zero. The market is still pricing the Apple trial verdict will be reversed to zero. And market is valuing Siri patents at zero, too.
And herein lies the opportunity for investors. If you believe the patent portfolio has some value (CIBC estimates it as over a Billion in potential licensing fees), then you get that for free.
There aren't too many investments in the marketplace today that give you this kind of risk/reward.
I would also highlight for the technicians out there, to take a look at previous rapid rises from 2.50 to 5.00 in the stock. Many of the some technical factors are appearing today. Remember, too, that when the stock gets above $3, you can trade this on margin as well, which adds liquidity into this stock.
All that is needed is a catalyst. But, again, the technicals are hinting that one is around the corner.
