Battery manufacturers use high purity 'battery grade' nickel sulfate as a chemical feed to form the NMC (etc) cathodes. High purity (class 1) elemental nickel can be reacted to form that nickel sulfate. Alternatively, (class 2) ferronickel can be further processed to convert it to nickel sulphate. I believe the cost advantages favour the producers of class 1 nickel (particularly those producers who lie lowest on the cost curve).
